Coworkers who are complaining about the amount of work they have and how physically and emotionally drained they already are.
And an empty coffeepot in the lunch break room because too many people are in need of that caffeine fix to get them through — heck, the next hour, let alone the rest of the day.

Energized Living Secret #1
Sleep more.
Undoubtedly you’ve heard this one before, so this might not qualify as a “secret.” But then again, since so few of us are really following this advice . . .
We all know that sleep is important. But yet, that’s the first thing that gets cut out your daily routine. “My body isn’t going to notice if I stay up that half hour longer tonight,” you think. Trying to make room in your day for that meditation? “Get up an hour earlier,” everyone urges.
Hmm? Sleep certainly doesn’t seem sacred, anymore. Remember when you were a child? Your parents insisted that you were in bed by a certain hour — and no amount of whining would change their minds.
Within the last two decades the average person has been getting less sleep. Just between 1999 and 2005 alone, the number of people who actually received eight hours of sleep dropped from 35 percent to 26 percent of the population. That’s less than one in four people!
But that’s not all. More and more of us are getting even less than six hours a night! During these same years, this portion of the population rose from 12 percent to 16 percent. 1
Now you’re thinking, this is all well and good. But I can’t really afford to get any more sleep in a day, I’m a busy person, you’re thinking. Before you even go there . . . read this statistic gleaned from an article in The Harvard Business Review. .
Getting only four to five hours of sleep a night is as dangerous to your performance as is a having a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania examined the effects of sleep on three groups during a two-week period. The first group slept only four hours a night. They were more than 14 times more likely to make an error than those who slept either eight or six hours. And they were 11 times more likely than the other two groups to make errors on memory tests.
If you’re thinking right about now how in heaven’s name you’re going to fit a full eight hours of sleep into your schedule every night, just take a deep breath and relax. You might not need quite as much.
Because it seems those individuals who live the longest and experience the fewest illnesses are those who sleep between 6.5 and 7.5 hours.
If you’re serious about infusing your body with a new dynamic level of energy, search your routine to discover what’s absolutely not necessary, cut it out of your schedule in order to get even an extra hour of sleep in a night.
Energized Living Secret #2
Sleep in a darkened room.
Oh, so you insist your bedroom is absolutely dark when you sleep?
Tonight when you turn off the light in your bedroom, take a good look around to see just how bright it really is. In addition to any nightlight you may keep on to protect you from things that go bump in the night . . . and any intruders, pay careful attention to see if your alarm clock glows in the dark . . . if there are lights on your computer that stay on . . . and any lights that come that cell phone you covetously keep by your side all night long.
And if you live in the city, don’t forget to see how any outside lighting seeps into your room . . . street lamps . . . security lights from your apartment building . . . and any other extraneous lighting.
Now, tell me how dark your bedroom really is!
You may be spending the appropriate amount of hours in bed. You may even be sleeping the right amount of hours. But, if you’re not sleeping in a room that’s dark enough, you may not be receiving enough quality rest to make you feel energized and refreshed the next morning.
It’s more important than you can think for the quality of your sleep that the room be dark. The dark of the room induces your body to produce a chemical called melatonin. Your body’s pineal gland produces this chemical normally with the onset of darkness.
If you can’t move the computer out — or do away with some of the electronic gadgets which seem to inherently come with lights — then buy yourself a sleeping mask. Don’t worry about how “silly” you may look. It’s more important for your energy levels and your health that you get a good night’s sleep.
You may also want to buy room-darkening blinds. These are especially helpful for those of you who work different shifts. These blinds really do prevent much of the light coming in from outside.
You’ll be amazed at how much more energy you have just by ensuring you’re sleeping in a room that is as dark as possible. The sooner you try it, the quicker you’ll have more energy.
Energized Living Secret #3
Eat smaller meals and eat them more frequently.
What, you say? How could eating smaller meals possibly help me? Ever get sleepy following a big meal? How do you feel after you’ve gorged on a lunch of burger, fries and a shake? Ready to take a nice, long nap, if you’re like the rest of us. Instead of eating a large meal try eating smaller, more nutritious meals throughout the day.
The reason for this is simple, according to Seattle sports nutritionist, Susan Kleiner, Ph.D., R.D., and author of Power Eating. When you eat a large meal, you’re dumping a large amount of fuel into your system all at one time. Your body doesn’t all of this fuel, so it stores what it doesn’t need as fat.
Food supplies your body with energy. Your body, in turn, uses that energy in order to perform all the functions of the day. But if you wait to long to eat or if you even skip a meal, you have inadvertently tilted your system out of balance. If you’ve ever played pinball and moved the machine too much in one direction and received a “tilt” warning. Your body — with this sluggishness — is telling you that it’s “tilted” out of balance. 2
“You feel energized,” explains Kleiner, “when your blood sugar levels are up. But when these levels drop — like after a meal full of simple carbohydrates or a large meal — your blood sugar levels plummet. “so, if you eat frequently to keep your blood sugar levels steady, you’ll feel more energized all day long.”
Energized Living Secret #4
Avoid sugar-ladened foods
(And what to do if you just “must” eat them occasionally).
Quick! Call 911! I’ve just succumbed to eating a food most definitely classified as a simple carbohydrate (pride keeps me from telling you that it’s a . . . ).
Why should you call 911? Because I know that within two hours, I’m going to crash, as sure as the sky is blue.
I know that if I want to keep my energy level constant throughout the day, I should not be eating foods that are loaded with sugar! That, my friend, is Energized Living Secret #4: Avoid sugary foods at all costs if you value your energy.
Oh, sure you may be taken in at first by the sweet, sweet sound of that Three Musketeer bar calling your name, just begging to be eaten. But think about it, is the taste of that candy bar really worth the loud . . .
BAM!
Excuse me! I just had my sugar crash. The paramedics here yet? I know I won’t be functioning well for a while!
Sound familiar? If you’re serious about keeping your energy level boosted all day long, avoid eating foods that contain lots of sugar. And before you say you don’t eat candy bars between meals, take a good, long look at the granola bar you’re munching on. My hunch is you’ll discover that the manufacturer has discovered at least five different words to convey one thought — and one ingredient: sugar. It may be in the form of fructose, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, dextrose or . . . need I go on?
These different sugars all find their way into a so-called healthy granola bar and you end up paying the price by crashing afterward. And the worst part is you probably aren’t even aware that it’s the sugar doing it!
If you just can’t help yourself and you feel that need for sugar, try to blunt that accompanying rush in insulin that your body floods your system with. You can do this easily enough by making sure you eat some protein along with your snack. Protein helps to slow the release of the insulin. And this in turn keeps you from going through that infamous post-sugar crash!3
In fact, some studies show that just by including protein with your sugar snack, you can lower your insulin spike by as much as 20 percent!
Energized Living Secret #5
Do interval cardio as soon as you wake up in the morning!
What’s the first thing you do in the morning? If you say eat breakfast, or down a protein shake, try to shake up your routine a bit — and turboboost your metabolism and energy level in the process.
Instead of making eating your first priority, make your cardio routine the first thing on your list. By doing this, you’ll be burning the fat you stored the day before, instead of using the energy your system has just taken in!
But more than that, this one habit can give you more energy throughout the entire day, according to Darin Steen, body builder, personal coach and author of the book, Fatloss Lifestyle [www.majorleaguehealth.com].
The secret here is that your body uses carbohydrates — and the glycogen it eventually turns to in your body — as your system’s primary and really preferred energy source. When your primary source of energy is in short supply — say when you wake up in the morning following that overnight fast — your body is forced to tap into its secondary, or reserve, energy source, your body fat.
If you do your cardio routine immediately after eating a meal, you’ll still burn fat. You’ll just burn less of it. That’s because your system will be busy burning off the carbohydrates you just ate.
Check out Darin’s book for more ideas of to get kick start your metabolism and boost your energy to new dynamic levels.
Energized Living Secret #6
Don’t eat foods containing trans fats.
Oh, you don’t eat any trans fatty acids, you reassure me. You’re very knowledgeable on the topic of trans fats. You know, for example, that they’re a man-made form of fat created primarily to keep various foods on the grocery store shelves for longer periods of time. You may even know that some public health officials have called this form of fat, the “worst nutritional disaster” in history.
And most especially you realize that trans fats are found in foods like cookies, pastries, frying foods at most fast food restaurants. But perhaps you haven’t noticed the connection. What connection you ask? The connection between your consumption of foods containing trans fat with a decreased energy level.
The connection, according to some nutritionists, isn’t a direct connection so you might not have noticed. When you eat foods with trans fat, you very well may experience constipation, which in turn can lead to a decrease — sometimes a stunning decrease — in your energy level.
You may not make the connection between consumption of trans fat and your fatigue for another reason which may seem well . . . just a little underhanded on the part of the food manufacturers.
You may be eating foods that actually contain this man-made fat and not even know it. If you think that the cookies you’re eating now . . or the candy you ate the other day . . . is free of this deadly substance because the package proudly proclaims “Zero Trans fat”. Think again.
That product — by the collaboration of both the US Food and Drug Administration and the food manufacturers — may very well still carry up to half a gram of trans fat per serving and still be labeled as trans fat free!
On the surface, that “leniency” in the labeling seems perfectly acceptable. But when was the last time you — or your child — had only one serving of cookies or crackers or even delicious Danish!
If one serving of this type of food could contain as much as half a gram — then two servings would contain one gram of this man-made fat. And then as you eat even more . . . well I think you get the picture now.
Before you know it, you’ve had several grams of trans fat . . . when you really thought you were trans fat free. And you’re energy deficient and clueless as to why!
How can you be sure to keep your energy level? Then try not to eat foods like certain types of margarines, crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods as well as other processed foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
And if you just can’t keep from eating these types of foods (and we all cave in to these cravings now and again!) try your darndest to keep your eating down to one serving. This way, even if the label says you’re not eating any trans fat, you can at least be satisfied that you’re eating no more than half gram.
Of course, even this advice may even tougher than you think, because in some instances the makers of these foods created a serving size so small that it’s impossible “to eat just one” as the old commercial used to say.
As you shake your head, you’ve already figured it out, haven’t you. Totally avoiding trans fat is almost impossible to do. So the next time you feel your energy seeping out of every pore of your body and you have no idea why, think back to those cookies or doughnuts you had for breakfast (or lunch or dinner!). Check out the labels. Be sure not only to read the nutritional labels but the ingredients list as well.
Double check the ingredients. If you see the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” then you’re eating trans fat. And you’ve found the source of your fatigue.
You know what you do next: Stop!
